Could Joshua Fight in Africa
Could Joshua fight in Africa next, AJ has stated that he would love to fight in all four continents.
Current IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has always shown an interest in fighting in Africa, and now it seems he is a few fights away from that event taking place. He would be going up against Africa’s number one, Congolese Martin Bakole.
The match would likely be held in Nigeria where AJ originates from and has family ties. It would undoubtedly be an explosive event.
Joshua has been ordered to defend his titles against Russia’s Alexander Povetkin. If he comes out victorious, he could be meeting America’s Deontay Wilder next. Bankole’s trainer, Bill Nelson believes that by that time, Bakole will be ready to meet AJ in the ring in what would prove a fantastic match up.
Nelson said, “AJ has always insisted that he wants to fight in Africa, so why not, in a years’ time take on Martin, the continent’s number one heavyweight.
Nelson further went on to add that while Martin may not be as experienced as Joshua, he is highly skilled and progressing fast. In 12 months he will have enough experience to give AJ a run for his money.
“A fight in Nigeria, where Anthony’s family comes from, what a fight it would be. It would be a proper, proper, fight. Stranger things have certainly happened in boxing,” said Nelson.
AJ In Africa
Anthony Joshua continues to entertain fans with his unbeaten record. However, he is yet to go for a fight abroad. If he continues on his winning streak to beat Povetkin and then Deontay Wilder, he would now be the undisputed heavyweight champion in the world of boxing and would have to look for challenges elsewhere.
And one of the ways he could do this is by fighting in other countries. In fact, promoter Eddie Hearn said, “I think it’s a natural progression to fight in other countries. AJ wants to break down boundaries as well, and part of that should be boxing in America, Africa, the Middle and the Far East.”
Martin Bakole currently has an undefeated record of 11 wins 8 of which are by Knockout. While the 26-year-old Bakole is still a few steps behind AJ, he has managed to stop the likes of DL Jones. He has also sparred with Daniel Dubois and Anthony Joshua himself.
After the sparring, AJ said that Martin Dubois gave him one of the best sparring sessions if not the best he’s ever had. Bill Nelson was impressed at how Martin Bakole handled AJ. He said, “I remember AJ exploding a right hand off Martin’s Jaw that even I nearly went down from it! Martin took it really well and came straight back with an uppercut of his own, a fantastic shot. He’s certainly got AJ’s respect and showed that he could take a shot and come straight back.”
Another undefeated brit that Martin Bakole could potentially face is Joe Joyce. Bill Nelson, however, believes that this is not something that Joe would be looking forward to. “Martin just has so much more than Joyce,” he said.
